Fresh off the 2020 BMW 2-Series Gran Coupe
premiering in 228i and M235i guise, artist Nikita Aksionov has decided to
imagine how the new car could look in M2 configuration. Before we discuss the design of
the car presented, it’s worth pointing out that it’s very unlikely BMW will
build an M2 Gran Coupe. We know that the current rear-wheel drive M2 will
remain in production for a couple more years and soon be updated with a
range-topping M2 CS variant.
When BMW kills off the current M2, it will soon
start work on the next-generation model based around the new-age 2-Series coupe
that’s set to retain a rear-wheel drive platform and is known internally at BMW
as “drift machine.”
The new BMW
2-Series Gran Coupe actually shares more in common with the front-wheel drive
1-Series as well as the X1 and X2 models than it does the 2-Series Coupe.
That’s not to say an M2 version couldn’t be exciting, however, because with a
potent all-wheel drive system it would certainly be a good performer.
The car designed by Aksionov, pictured in a number
of different colors, includes much more aggressive front and rear fascias.
There is a new front bumper complete with blacked-out air intakes, distinctive
multi-spoke black and silver wheels, a carbon fiber lip spoiler, quad
tailpipes, and a sharp rear diffuser. It looks good. For the foreseeable future, the 2-Series Gran Coupe
family will be topped out by the M235i xDrive. This model features a 2.0-liter
turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine with 301 hp and 450 Nm of
torque.
