While the United States will most likely be denied
the regular version of the all-new VW Golf Mk8, Canada will get it in late
2021. VW Canada has confirmed that the next-generation Golf will launch
before the end of 2021 as a 2022 model-year. “The Mk8 Golf as well as the GTI
and Golf R variants will start to arrive sometime in 2021 as 2022 models,”
Thomas Tetzlaff, Volkswagen Canada’s public relations manager, told The Car
Guide.
While that’s a long wait for Canadian customers,
they can take consolation in the fact that they will get the all-new VW Golf,
unlike the United States. VW Canada recently convinced the German automaker to
keep offering the base Golf in the country after the redesign, despite plans to
cut base versions in the U.S. VW will continue to offer the base Golf, the GTI,
and e-Golf locally until the launch of the Golf Mk8.
The 2020 model year will be the last for the e-Golf,
however, as the electric hatch will be replaced by a new generation of EVs from
the ID. family. The first to arrive in Canada will be the production version of
the ID. Crozz concept in early 2021 and will most likely wear the ID.4 moniker. Canadian dealers will also
continue selling the Golf SportWagon and Golf Alltrack through 2020 as VW
Canada announced it would stockpile about one year’s worth of production of the
compact wagons.
The base Golf is a very important model for the
carmaker’s Canadian lineup. In the first half of 2019, VW sold 6,201 base
Golfs, accounting for about 71 percent of all Golf sales. The company also sold
about 2,400 Golf wagons during the same period, according to Autonews Canada
data. Furthermore, the Golf accounted for about 27 percent of all VW Canada
sales, compared to just 10 percent in the United States.
