VW continues the development of the 2021 Caddy, as spy photographers have caught a couple of prototypes undergoing testing near the Arctic Circle. Dressed in heavy camouflage, the redesigned van has an all-new front fascia that echoes the one on the upcoming T7. Details are hard to make out, but it appears the model will have a slender grille that resides above a thin air intake and angular headlights with stylish daytime running lights.
The rest of the model is pretty evolutionary, as it retains its familiar shape. Despite this sense of déjà vu, the van has a more traditional shoulder line and streamlined bodywork. The greenhouse is also new as it features shorter rear windows which kick up at the D-pillar.
At the rear, there’s an all-new tailgate with a recessed section that holds the license plate. The prototype also suggests the production model will have slimmer and taller taillights than the outgoing version. Little else is known about the Caddy at this point, but the model is expected to be offered with multiple wheelbases. There should also be commercial and passenger variants.
Under the skin, we can expect to find Volkswagen’s MQB platform which underpins everything from the Audi TT to the all-new Golf Mk8. Speaking of the latter, the Caddy should share a couple of engines with the it. There’s no word on specifics, but the Golf is available with an assortment of 1.0- and 1.5-liter petrol engines that produce between 88 HP and 148 HP. It also sports mild- and plug-in hybrid powertrains as well as a couple of diesel with outputs of 113 HP and 148 HP respectively.
