Just in time you were wondering if the
world has enough 600-HP SUVs, Mercedes-AMG was caught putting the finishing
touches on the GLE 63 Coupe. It was only a matter of time before the Coupe
variant would show up, since the ‘regular’ GLE 63 made its debut at the last LA
Auto Show back in November. The test car’s camo wrap is limited only on the
front and rear bumpers as there’s not much left to hide. Power will be provided
by AMG’s twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 engine, which in its latest form is
accompanied by an EQ Boost starter-alternator along with a 48-volt electrical
architecture and a cylinder deactivation system, making this performance SUV a
mild hybrid one.
Customers will get to choose between the
base 63 model, which offers 563 HP and 750 Nm of torque,
and the more powerful 63 S version, which puts down 603 HP and 850 Nm. The EQ Boost motor will add up to 22 HP and 250 Nm to
assist the engine but let’s face it, AMG’s V8 isn’t a unit that needs much
assisting. We already know that the ‘regular’ Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 S is capable
of a 0-100 km/h in 3.8 seconds and of a 280 km/h. Perhaps
the Coupe variant could prove to be a tad quicker in acceleration and a tad
more slippy through the air thanks to its sloping roofline.
Both variants of the 2021 Mercedes-AMG GLE
63 Coupe will be hooked to a nine-speed automatic transmission, AMG’s
Performance all-wheel drive and an electronically controlled limited rear differential.
Model-specific air suspension with three-stage adaptive dampers will be also
standard, as well as an active roll stabilization system to keep that tall body
perfectly flat on the bends.
The latest member of AMG’s SUV family is
expected to make its official premiere anytime now, with the most likely
candidate to be the upcoming Geneva Motor Show, where the German car maker is
expected to reveal the facelifted E-Class and the range-topping AMG GT 73
4-Door Coupe plug-in hybrid as well, so stay tuned.
