Renault has updated the entire Megane
range for the 2020 model year, giving it a plug-in hybrid version for the first
time, offered in the Estate body style at launch. Named the 2020 Megane E-Tech,
it combines the 1.6-liter four-cylinder petrol engine with two electric motors
for a total system output of 160 PS and comes with an
innovative multi-mode clutchless transmission for optimized gear shifting.
The car packs a 9.8 kWh battery that
allows it to run on electric power for 50 km and up to a top speed
of 135 km/h in the mixed WLTP test cycle, and for 65 km in
the city. Renault estimates that it emits less than 40 grams of carbon dioxide
per kilometer, but the WLTP figure has yet to be announced.
The model features three driving modes
named Pure, MySense and Sport, with the first one running in all-electric mode,
provided that there is enough juice in the battery. The second one optimizes
the hybrid system for lower running costs and comes with a special ‘E-Save’
feature that can save at least 40 percent of battery power, whereas Sport
allows drivers to take full advantage of the car by combining the power of the
three units.
You will probably struggle to spot the
visual changes over the previous iteration, but some of the novelties include
the new front bumper, chrome trim in the fog light surrounds and restyled air
deflectors. The car boasts more pronounced fenders, raised contour lines of the
taillights and dynamic indicators, as well as new 16- and 18-inch wheels. The
Solar Copper, Baltic Grey and Highland Grey paint finishes have been added to
the color palette and all versions feature the new LED Pure Vision headlights.
Renault has modernized the interior of the
2020 Megane by giving it a 10.2-inch digital screen for the first time, which
joins the new 9.3-inch infotainment system – both with navigation and
smartphone integration. The center console boasts a new look and, depending on
the selected trim level, you could get new upholstery options, rimless
electro-chromatic rearview mirror and power adjustments for the driver’s seat.
New driver assistance features are also
available, including the Highway & Traffic Jam Companion, which is a Level
2 semi-autonomous system that can be activated at speeds between 0 and 160 km/h and makes the daily commute more pleasant.
Petrol offerings include the 1.3-liter TCe
with 115, 140 and 160 PS, joined by the
100 PS variant, available with a six-speed manual or
seven-speed DCT. The 1.0-liter TCe rated at 120 PS will join
the lineup at the end of 2020. Drivers who usually put many miles on the
odometer will want one of the two diesels available that come with 95 and 115 PS, respectively. The former is paired to a
six-speed manual and the latter to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic
transmission.
The new Megane RS Line replaces the GT
Line in the 2020 Megane and brings a distinctive look, inspired by the
full-blown RS models. The F1-style blade, honeycomb grille, two exhaust pipes,
17- or 18-inch wheels, front sports seats, perforated leather steering wheel
with ‘RS’ logo, aluminum pedals and a few other extras are part of the package
here.
For the 2020MY, the Megane RS is offered
with the Sport chassis only and 300 PS and 420 Nm of torque – offering 20 PS and 30 Nm more when
fitted with the EDC transmission. Choosing the manual gearbox will get you 400
Nm. The hot hatch also features a mechanical valve to adjust the
soundtrack and carries over the 4Control, RS Monitor and other systems, while
getting the new screens inside.
Offered exclusively with the Cup chassis,
the 2020 Megane RS Trophy soldiers on with 300 PS and sports
new LED headlights, shark fin antenna, rear privacy glass and upgraded
Alcantara upholstery. Renault will launch the facelifted Megane in Europe this
summer.
