The BAIC BJ80 may follow in the footsteps
of the iconic Mercedes G-Class closer than is legal in some countries, but it
is okay in China where it is sold.
In its newly revealed 2020 version, the
body-on-frame SUV stays true to the design of its inspiration source,
faithfully copying the rectangular body and the round headlights. In turn, the
radiator grille leans into the Jeep territory.
The main improvement arrives in the shape
of a new three-liter turbocharged engine rated at 280 hp. The mill
teams up with a six-speed automatic transmission by Aisin and a Borg Warner
transfer case to deliver the momentum to all four wheels.
This renders the new BAIC BJ80 technically
superior to its predecessor shown in the video, which made do with 250 hp sourced from its 2.3-liter Saab turbo.
