The miniature urban ride will come as a
replacement for the VW e-up and measure only 3.6 to 3.7 meters long. Volkswagen Group has been looking for opportunities to release a
cheap, yet reliable electric vehicle for the past four years. Since then, the
corporation has produced MEB, a new architecture designed specifically for EVs
such as the current ID.3 and the upcoming ID.4. The ID.1 should thus become the
third major release on the MEB platform.
The e-up! starts from €21,975 in Germany
right now, no subsidies included. It comes equipped with a single electric
motor rated at 83 hp and 212 Nm of torque. Its 36.8-kWh
battery has 32.3 kilowatt-hours of useful capacity and comes rated for 260
kilometers of WLTP range.
As for the upcoming VW ID.1, media in
Great Britain tend to believe that it will ship with two battery sizes to
choose from – 24 and 36 kWh – and have up to 300 km of range. The
design will likely draw upon the ID.3, and the price point will probably lie
far below € 20,000.
The ID.2 should eventually come into the
spotlight as a B-Class electric vehicle between 3.9 and 4.1 meters long. The Renault Zoe will be its most likely competitor. This isn’t
official, but seems logical once you consider that Volkswagen has claimed
trademark rights for car names from ID.1 through ID.9.
