Volkswagen AG currently uses three suffixes to denote its performance cars: GTI for gasoline, GTD for diesel, and GTE for electric. The latest rumor claims that the lineup will soon expand to incorporate the ID.4 GTX, the first member of a new ‘electric sports car’ family. VW CTO Matthias Rabe confirmed that a high-end variant of the electric SUV was in the works, but did not specify whether it would receive the GTX affix or something different.

Rabe said earlier that many buyers of high-performance electric cars were looking for all-wheel drive, among other things. The dual-engined ID.4 has it by default, while the ID.3 hatchback family makes do with a single engine and RWD so far.

The new ID.4 comes based on the MEB architecture and will initially launch with the same electric motor as the ID.3, rated at 204 hp and 310 Nm of torque. The AWD version should emerge later on based on the I.D. Crozz Concept, which had two motors jointly rated at 305 hp and 450 Nm. The power capacity remains unknown at this time, but we know that the I.D. Crozz Concept packed a 83-kWh battery. This should translate into approximately 500 kilometers of WLTP-rated range.

Next in the performance line is an upcoming coupe-SUV provisionally known as the ID.5 and the ID.3 hatchback.
