The next-generation Peugeot 308 is scheduled to launch for the 2022 model year and looks set to bring with it a high-performance variant to rival the VW Golf R. Underpinning the new-age Peugeot 308 will be an updated version of the EMP2 architecture that was originally introduced with the current 308 and has since found its way into many other PSA Group models. A number of variants will be offered, including an entry-level plug-in hybrid that combines a 1.6-liter petrol with an electric motor driving the front wheels.

Joining this model will be a performance-focused version that has the potential to get enthusiasts very excited. Autocar claims that this model will retain a 1.6-liter turbo and an electric motor powering the front wheels but will also benefit from a second electric motor sending its power through the rear wheels.

The result should be a hatch with more than 300 hp that will likely make use of advanced torque vectoring and all-wheel drive through the two electric motors. It’s understood the car will come courtesy of the Peugeot Sport Engineered sub-brand and follow on from a performance version of the Peugeot 508 that’s set to arrive shortly. There’s no mention of the hot 308 still featuring the iconic GTi badge.

Looking beyond this hot version of the new 308, it is claimed the car will be sold in five-door hatchback and estate variants. A number of petrol and diesel engines will also be offered to complement the two aforementioned plug-in hybrid models. Peugeot boss Jean-Philippe Imparato has also spoken about the possibility of an all-electric powertrain in the past.
