The Maserati MC20 was originally slated to
be unveiled later this month, but the coronavirus threw a wrench in those
plans. As a result, we’ve being treated to an extended teaser campaign which
will lead up to the model’s new debut in September.
While we’re not exactly looking forward to
four more months of teasers, the latest images give us a slightly better look
at the MC20’s face – albeit heavily obscured by motion blur. Putting that
aside, we can see the car will have a prominent splitter and vertical air
intakes. The model also has a large grille which is flanked by slender
headlights.
Previous teasers have also shown a rakish
windscreen, a gently sloping roof and prominent side scoops. There will also be
muscular rear haunches, a ventilated rear fascia and a dual exhaust system.
Maserati has been tight-lipped on specifics, but the MC20 is rumored to have a
mid-mounted twin-turbo V6 engine that produces more than 600 hp. Regardless of its output, the company has previously said the new engine
was “100% designed, developed and produced by Maserati itself.”
The engine is slated to be connected to an
eight-speed dual clutch transmission which sends power to the rear wheels.
Hybrid and electric variants are also expected, and so is a drop top. Getting
back to the latest teaser images, they were taken in Sicily on some of the
roads where the Targa Florio took place. The MC20 made the trip as Maserati
wanted to celebrate the 80th anniversary of their win on May 23rd, 1940 with
the Tipo 4CL.
Maserati says the trip wasn’t just for fun
as the MC20 is now being tested on the road and the track. Information gained
from these tests will be used to help fine tune the car ahead of its debut
later this year.
