The iconic Porsche 911 ‘Safari’ was a
hugely successful racer back in its day and has inspired many owners of classic
911s to build their own versions for the road. Rather than taking an old 911
and slapping on some fenders and jacking up the ride height to make a ‘Safari’
replica, designer Emre Husmen has imagined his dream off-road-focused 911 based
on a more modern 993 Turbo model and dubbed the 911X.
The first thing required when transforming
a 911 from a road-hugging sports car into a vehicle that can tackle rally
courses is to fit some new wheels. In road-going guise, the car is depicted
with a set of gargantuan 24-inch wheels which can be swapped out for a set of
smaller 19-inch shoes with mud terrain tires when the going gets tough.
Allowing the 993 Turbo off-roader to feel
right at home regardless of the road conditions is a height-adjustable
suspension system. In addition, the car features bash plates under the front,
beneath the skirts and across the rear to protect the undercarriage from rocks.
The car has also been designed to look the part without a rear spoiler or
transformed with a large ducktail spoiler or a more pronounced rear wing.
Looking beyond the off-road accessories,
it’s impossible not to notice how the overall design of the 993-generation 911
has also been freshened up with the fitment of LED headlights and daytime
running lights as well as flared arches and an overhauled lighting array at the
rear.
