Ford of Europe has introduced two mild-hybrid powertrains on the Fiesta and now the Focus. Available to order for customers across Europe, the 48-volt mild-hybrid technology works with the 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine, offering 125 or 155 PS of power. The average fuel consumption of the more powerful unit is 4.1 l/100 km (68.9 mpg UK / 57.3 mpg US), with corresponding CO2 emissions of 93 g/km – as per NEDC.

According to Ford, that represents a 17 percent fuel efficiency improvement compared with the powertrain it replaces, the 150 PS 1.5-liter EcoBoost three-cylinder with six-speed manual transmission.

Both mild-hybrid powertrains replace the 1.0liter EcoBoost petrol engine’s standard alternator with a belt-driven integrated starter/generator (BISG). The latter enables recovery of energy usually lost during braking and coasting to charge a 48-volt lithium-ion air-cooled battery pack. The BISG also acts as a motor, using the stored energy to provide torque during normal driving and acceleration, as well as running the vehicle’s electrical ancillaries.

Besides the new mild-hybrid powertrains, the 2021 Ford Focus continues to offer the 120 PS 1.5-liter EcoBlue and 150 PS 2.0-liter EcoBlue turbo diesel engines, each available with either six-speed manual or eight-speed auto transmissions. Customers who want a petrol engine without mild-hybrid assistance only have one choice: the base 125 PS 1.0-liter EcoBoost offered with a six-speed manual or optional eight-speed auto.

In addition to the new electrified powertrain option, the 2021 Ford Focus gains a fully configurable 12.3-inch LCD instrument cluster with curved upper edges and a standard FordPass Connect modem. The latter enables Local Hazard Information notifications for the first time, as well as remote Door Lock/Unlock, Remote Start4 for Focus models with eight-speed automatic transmission, Vehicle Locator, and Vehicle Status functions.

Finally, 2021MY updates also include a new Focus Connected trim level offered with an advanced suite of standard technologies, including a wireless charging pad, SYNC 3 with navigation, Adaptive Cruise Control, front and rear parking sensors and a rear-view camera. The Focus remains available in Titanium, Active, ST-Line and Vignale trim levels, in five-door, wagon and four-door sedan body styles (the latter in Turkey and Romania only).
