The Audi Q5 Sportback has entered the
track-testing phase, with our spy photographers spotting a prototype at the
Nurburgring. The premium compact crossover coupe, which will challenge the
likes of the Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe and BMW X4, wasn’t willing to show more
skin compared to the previous scoop, with wraps covering all body panels and
the rear windows.
A more chic looking alternative to the
facelifted Q5, which made its premiere last month, the first-ever Q5 Sportback
will set itself apart with the sloping roofline, different grille pattern,
tweaked front and rear bumpers and new graphics for the taillights, at a first
glance at least. Other than that, expect a smaller cargo area and probably less
headroom for rear seat occupants, as well as a slightly more expensive price.
The vehicle’s cockpit hasn’t been nabbed
yet, but it should mirror that of the 2021 Q5, with the only differences likely
being new upholstery and trims. It will feature a digital instrument cluster
next to the freestanding infotainment system, and things such as the smartphone
interface, voice controls, premium sound system and a plethora of safety gear
will be part of the package.
The new Q5 should lend its engine family
to the Q5 Sportback and the offerings will likely include the 362 HP 2.0-liter
plug-in hybrid in the 55 TFSI e quattro. A 349 HP SQ5 Sportback should be on
the cards as well, but an RS model doesn’t seem likely for either variant of
the Q5 in the immediate future.
