The Volkswagen Golf lineup is about to
grow as the upcoming Golf R has been caught undisguised. Posted on Instagram by
wilcoblok, the images reveal the high-performance hatchback will feature an
evolutionary front fascia with large air intakes. While the design is a bit
hard to make out, previous prototypes have been spied with minimal camouflage.
Elsewhere, we can see silver mirror caps
and five-spoke alloy wheels that are backed up by a high-performance braking
system with ventilated discs and blue calipers featuring R badging. The model
also has a sportier rear bumper, a gloss black diffuser and a four-tailpipe
exhaust system.
The single interior image isn’t very
revealing, but it shows a sport steering wheel with large paddle shifters. The
wheel also has blue contrast stitching, a blue central spoke and a dedicated R
button which presumably puts the hot hatch into a special performance mode. We
can also see a digital instrument cluster and what appears to be carbon fiber
or metallic trim. Other highlights will include R-branded sport seats and an
infotainment system with a 10-inch display.
Volkswagen hasn’t said much about the
upcoming model, but it’s expected to use a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder
engine that produces around 328 hp. It should be connected to
dual-clutch transmission and a standard all-wheel drive system. Volkswagen has
been testing the model undisguised for several months, so a debut is likely
right around the corner. However, given the coronavirus pandemic, an auto show
unveiling is almost certainly out of the question.
