The hydrogen fuel cell-powered second generation Mirai is scheduled to go on sale in the U.S. next month, boasting two grades and the Toyota Safety Sense 2.5+ bundle as standard across the range. This new model is based on the Mirai Concept from 2019 and represents a massive departure from the styling of the first-generation car, which was awkward-looking to put it mildly.
The new design is said to be more
aerodynamic, featuring a highly rigid coupe-like body that is lower, longer and
wider. Its bolder stance is further accentuated by the available 20-inch alloy
wheels, while buyers will get a choice of five colors: Hydro Blue, Oxygen
White, Supersonic Red, Heavy Metal and Black. The new Mirai will be offered in
two grades, XLE and Limited. The latter get 19-inch black wheels as standard
and 20-inch super chrome-finish ones as optional extras, while and the XLE
comes standard with 19-inch twin-spoke rims.
Inside, the XLE get Black SofTex-trimmed
heated seats with gray stitching covering the doors, headliner and steering
wheel, as well as silver accents throughout the cabin. The Limited offers a
choice of black or white heated and ventilated perforated SofTex-trimmed seats,
as well as a panoramic moonroof panels with power sliding shade. This trim also
features a power sunshade for the rear window. In terms of tech, you get a
standard 12.3-inch infotainment display with 14 JBL speakers, a subwoofer and
amplifier, as well as Android Auto, Apple CarPlay and Amazon Alexa compatibility.
Behind the steering wheel there’s an 8-inch color LCD digital gauge cluster,
while a Qi-compatible smartphone wireless charging tray is also available at no
extra cost.
The 2021 Mirai is one of three Toyota
models to feature the Safety Sense 2.5+ suite, which now includes a smarter
Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection that can see cyclists,
pedestrians and even an oncoming vehicle or pedestrian at an intersection when
performing a left-hand turn. The new Mirai also offers Full-Speed Dynamic Radar
Cruise Control, which can be activated at speeds of more than 48 km/h and can bring the car to a complete stop if necessary, while also being able to
resume from a complete stop.
Another feature allows for the overtaking
of slower vehicles. According to Toyota, “if traveling behind a vehicle

Even though no official specs were
provided by the Japanese carmaker, the 2021 Mirai reportedly comes with three
hydrogen storage tanks that facilitate a driving range of 850 km according to Japanese standards. The electric motor meanwhile is said to
deliver 180 HP and 300 Nm of torque, allowing for a top
speed of 175 km/h. Pricing should be announced at a later date.
