Toyota has kicked off the winter testing phase of the next generation Aygo, with yet another prototype of the small city car. This time a heavily camouflaged prototype was spotted in northern Europe featuring a cloth top. The canvas roof will most likely be an option, like on the current generation, providing an open cockpit experience at the push of a button.

Besides this feature, the prototype also gave us a clearer look at the redesigned front end, which gets a new set of headlights with LED turn signals. The bumper appears to have a much cleaner design and still incorporates the upper and lower grilles, which seem to be wider, and the fog lamp housings have less sharp surroundings.

Moving on to the profile, we can see that the front end looks longer and that the roof has a more arched shape. The taillights retain the vertical design, flanking the small tailgate, and the reflectors in the new bumper are also mounted vertically and further up this time. Reports indicate a small petrol engine that will be used to power the entry-level variant. A self-charging hybrid appears to be on the cards too, and in all likelihood, the new Aygo won’t get a battery-electric option.

Toyota’s upcoming city car will be built at the same factory as its predecessor, in the Czech Republic, and should debut towards the end of the year or in early 2022. However, the Toyota Aygo’s Peugeot 108 and Citroen C1 siblings won’t live on for the new generation as confirmed by the French carmaker back in 2018.
