The 2021 Mercedes-Maybach S-Class will arrive at U.S. dealerships towards the middle of the year and the company has revealed pricing will start at US$ 184,900 – excluding a US$ 1,050 destination and delivery fee. Costing US$ 75,100 more than the standard 2021 S-Class (US$ 109,800), the Maybach will battle the Bentley Flying Spur and is an essentially an S-Class on steroids.
Starting with the exterior, the model has
a unique front fascia with an exclusive grille that features vertical slats.
Buyers will also find flush-mounted door handles, soft close doors and a
panoramic sunroof. Rounding out the highlights are 20-inch wheels and
illuminated Maybach emblems on the C-pillars. The most noticeable difference is
the Maybach’s extended length as the model measures 5469 mm long
and has a wheelbase that spans 3396 mm. This makes it 185 mm longer than the standard S-Class with170 mm being found
between the wheels.
The star of the show is the interior and
it boasts a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a 12.8-inch infotainment
system and a 30-speaker Burmester 4D surround sound system. There are also
heated, ventilated and massaging front seats that are wrapped in exclusive
Maybach Nappa leather. That’s just scratching the surface as the model has a
four-zone climate control system, front / rear wireless smartphone chargers,
and an Air Balance package with ionization and a fragrance diffuser. Other
highlights include illuminated door sill plates, a 64-color ambient lighting
system, and active multicontour rear seats with neck and shoulder heating.
Speaking of back seat passengers, they can
sit back and relax while watching videos on two 11.6-inch touchscreen displays.
The rear seat entertainment system also boasts two wireless headsets and an
MBUX tablet. While the model comes nicely equipped, there are a handful of
options including an Executive Rear Seat Plus package that adds two individual
rear seats which are separated by a center console that houses
temperature-controlled cup holders and folding tables. Other options include a
refrigerator, electronically-operated rear doors and champagne flutes.
In terms of safety, the Maybach has a
seemingly endless list of driver assistance systems. To rattle them off,
there’s Active Distance Assist Distronic with Route-Based Speed Adaptation,
Active Stop-and-Go Assist, and Active Steering Assist with Active Emergency
Stop Assist and Active Lane Change Assist. The model also has Active Brake
Assist with a Cross-Traffic Function, Active Speed Limit Assist with Traffic
Sign Assist, Active Blind Spot Assist with Exit Warning, and Active Lane
Keeping Assist. Rounding out the features are Car-to-X communications
technology, Active Parking Assist, Pre-Safe Impulse Side and Pre-Safe Plus with
Pre-Safe Sound.
Power is provided by a twin-turbo
4.0-liter V8 engine with EQ Boost technology. The engine produces 496 hp and 700 Nm)of torque, while an electric motor can
contribute an additional 21 hp and 249 Nm of torque
for short periods of time. This setup enables the all-wheel drive sedan to hit
an electronically limited top speed of 209 km/h.
