Last month McLaren unveiled the Artura, a brand-new plug-in hybrid supercar that will replace the 570S. Despite being launched as a coupe, as with all of Woking’s models (save for the limited-run Ultimate Series) a Spider version should be on the works.
Oftentimes, engineering an open-top
version is not that simple, as the loss of a fixed roof necessitates chassis
reinforcements to make up for the reduced rigidity. However, the Artura is
based on a new carbon fiber tub that, despite weighing 181 lbs, is not only
lighter, but also offers improved structural stiffness, thus developing the
Spider shouldn’t be that difficult.
Although McLaren hasn’t (naturally) announced anything yet, from what we’ve seen with its other open-top models it would look just as good as the coupe, if not better. AksyonovNikita rendered McLaren’s latest supercar as a quite convincing Spider, finished in Belize Blue with discreet red accents in the brake calipers, the front fender vents and door handles.
Deliveries of McLaren’s first electrified
series production model (the P1 was a limited run) are scheduled to kick off in
the third quarter of the year. Pricing starts at US$ 225,000 and power is supplied
by a twin-turbo 3.0-liter V6 and an electric motor, assisted by a 7.4 kWh
lithium-ion battery. The combined output and torque stands at 671 HP and 720 Nm. The Artura weighs 1,395 kg dry,
has an electric range of 30 km, a 330 km/h top speed and
will accelerate to 100 km/h in 3.0 seconds.
