Volvo might finally enter the subcompact SUV segment in a few years with a model that will sit under the current XC40 and XC40 Recharge. Allegedly dubbed the XC20, it was the subject of speculation in the past, but it seems that the Swedish automaker might have finally confirmed it in a rendering attached to their recent announcement of going full electric by the end of the decade.
The digital image shows seven new Volvos
that will supposedly launch in a few years, and one of them, more specifically
the one placed in the middle of the second row, is believed to be the small
SUV. Mind you, this is a simple illustration, and it “should serve only as a
visualization, and not as a clear guidance on future electric Volvo models”,
the automaker said.
An earlier report, dating back to last
fall, suggests that the rumored XC20 – named unconfirmed; keep in mind that
Volvo also owns the rights to use the XC30 and XC10 names too – might be based
on Geely’s Sustainable Experience Architecture (SEA). The company’s CEO, Hakan
Samuelsson, believes that they can use the platform for a “very premium Volvo”,
despite being built for China, adding that it will be their first sub-40 model
and an SUV, because they “are very popular”, and “it should be all-electric
too”.
It is still unknown when the rumored XC20
(if that is indeed its official name) will make its way to the market, but it
could be part of the car firm’s plan of selling 50 percent of their vehicles
with battery-electric powertrains by 2025.
