BMW introduced the 2022 2-Series Coupe earlier this month and that means attention is turning to the upcoming M2. Recently caught undergoing testing, the high-performance model is heavily disguised but will feature a sleeker and more upscale design. Details are hard to make out, but the grille and headlights should carryover from the standard model. However, we can expect a more aggressive front bumper.

Moving further back, we can see lightweight wheels that are backed up by a high-performance braking system. The fenders also look a bit wider than the ones on the standard 2-Series, but it’s hard to be certain at this point. One thing that’s unmistakable is the sportier four-tailpipe exhaust system. It’s joined by a more aggressive rear bumper and a small spoiler on the trunk.

While the M2 will largely follow in the footsteps of the M240i, this prototype features a radically different interior. As you can see, the model features a freestanding digital instrument cluster and infotainment system that echoes the one found on the i4 and iX. The regular model, on the other hand, has a cabin that mirrors the 3- and 4-Series.

It remains to be seen if this will carryover to the production model, but it seems likely as the i4 and iX run BMW Operating System 8 whereas the 2-Series Coupe has the older 7 version. That was notable when the car was introduced and it’s possible the regular model will be upgraded to OS 8 as part of its facelift.

Putting that aside, the M2 is expected to go into production in December of 2022 with a twin-turbo 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine that produces between 480 hp and 490 hp. If those numbers pan out, it would be a huge increase over the outgoing M2 Competition which is rated at 405 hp. Of course, a big gain is needed to keep the M2 relevant as the M240i pumps out 382 hp in the United States.
