Mitsubishi announced the upcoming premiere of the new-generation Outlander PHEV, which will be available in Japan in late 2021 or early 2022, with the US debut following in the second half of 2022. The current Outlander PHEV was launched in the US in 2016 but in 2021 it was updated with an improved powertrain. However, the exterior, interior, and platform of the third-gen Outlander date back to 2012, which is almost a decade ago.
The all-new fourth-generation Outlander that debuted in February 2021 in ICE-powered form comes with a fresh platform shared with the Nissan Rogue, the latest infotainment and safety technology while integrating Mitsubishi’s updated design language. Exterior dimensions are slightly increased, with the new model measuring 468 cm long, 186 cm wide, and 174.7 cm tall.
The teasers reveal the PHEV badges on the boot and front fenders, and the charging port which is located on the rear right side of the vehicle. Overall, the design is expected to closely mirror the ICE-powered Outlander, with only a few details distinguishing it as the electrified version. Inside, there will be three rows of seats with room for seven, although the addition of the battery is expected to slightly affect cargo space.
According to Mitsubishi, the PHEV version of the Outlander will have increased output and battery capacity over its predecessor, offering more range. The twin-motor 4WD PHEV system will also be improved, offering all-wheel-drive and better fuel efficiency.
