Hyundai has equipped the 2022 Tucson PHEV with a 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine supplemented by an electric motor and a 13.8-kWh battery pack. It pumps out 261 hp and 350 Nm of torque and Hyundai had expected it would return an estimated 70 MPGe and be able to travel up to 45km on electric power. Now, EPA ratings have revealed that it actually has an electric range of 33 miles and is capable of 80 MPGe. When running on gas, the SUV returns 35 mpg over the combined cycle and according to the EPA, it can travel 676 km before the gas tank is empty and the battery is completely drained.

These are impressive figures, although they are not class-leading. The Toyota RAV4 Prime sits atop the pack of plug-in hybrid SUVs of this size and has 42-miles of electric range and a rating of 94 MPGe and 38 mpg combined. This isn’t much of a surprise considering the RAV4 Prime is equipped with a larger 18.1 kWh battery pack. Hyundai has yet to announce pricing details for the 2022 Tucson PHEV but Autoblog notes that it will be eligible for a US$ 6,587 federal tax credit.

Of course, shoppers don’t have to opt for the PHEV model. Hyundai also offers the 2022 Tucson with two other engines in the United States, including a gas 2.5-liter naturally-aspirated four-cylinder with 187 hp. A self-charging hybrid model is also available packing a 1.6-liter turbocharged engine with 177 hp and an electric motor providing an additional 59 hp. This variant also has a 1.49 kWh battery pack.
