Volkswagen of America has already introduced a handful of 2022 models, but the company is now detailing changes to the rest of their lineup. Starting with the Arteon, the model gains a new 2.0-liter TSI engine that produces 300 hp and 400 Nm of torque. That’s a gain of 32 hp and 50 Nm.
Besides the more powerful engine, the 2022 Arteon features a new seven-speed DSG transmission which replaces the previous eight-speed automatic. Additional changes are limited, but the entry-level SE R-Line gains a wireless smartphone charger, park distance control and restyled 18-inch alloy wheels. Furthermore, the mid-level SEL R-Line now comes equipped with all-wheel drive. While the updates are welcome, pricing starts at US$ 39,995. That’s a US$ 3,000 increase over last year’s model.
Moving on, the 2022 Atlas lineup has been “streamlined” to six trims as the entry-level S variant has been dropped. The model also gains additional equipment as the Atlas SE now features an 8-inch digital instrument cluster, while the Atlas SE with the Technology package adds third row USB-C ports as well as a trailer hitch for models equipped with the VR6 engine. Lastly, SEL variants now come equipped with all-wheel drive as well as 20-inch wheels.
Due to the elimination of the entry-level trim, pricing climbs to US$ 33,475. That’s a bit more than last year’s model, but it’s not all bad news as the Atlas SE costs US$ 1,430 less than its predecessor. The changes to the Atlas Cross Sport are virtually identical to those found on the Atlas as the entry-level S variant has been dropped, while surviving trims gain additional equipment. Pricing starts at US$ 32,775 – which is an increase of US$ 1,920 – but this represents a savings of US$ 1,430 compared to the previous Atlas Cross Sport SE.
Sticking with crossovers, the electric ID.4 “largely carries over for the 2022 model year.” Volkswagen declined to elaborate, but we should learn more in the coming months. Volkswagen also confirmed the Jetta and Jetta GLI will be refreshed for 2022. Spy photographers snapped the facelifted GLI last month and it features a lightly revised exterior with a honeycomb mesh grille as well as revised air intakes.
Of course, Volkswagen of America has already introduced a handful of other 2022 models including the facelifted Tiguan as well as the all-new Golf GTI, Golf R and Taos. The company also reiterated the Passat will be dropped at the end of the 2022 model year, so it’s gaining a Limited Edition variant to mark the end of the road.
