Audi is planning a new big electric SUV model for the Chinese market and it seems, like the Q4 e-tron, it will be based on Volkswagen’s MEB platform. First previewed in April at the Shanghai Auto Show, the upcoming electric Audi SUV model is set to offer big interior volume for the big market. The automaker said there that their new electric SUV will be 4.87 meters long, which is almost identical to the 4.8-meter-long VW ID.6 and sits somewhere between the Q4 and the Q7 in length.

The car seen testing here looks a lot like the car previewed at Shanghai (below), with its aerodynamically swept-back windshield, its pronounced haunches, and its overall proportions. We’ve seen this car testing before in Germany, but last time its taillights were more covered. Keeping to Audi’s design practices, they stretch across the entirety of the rear of the SUV but are a little thicker than the concept’s lights.

The headlights, meanwhile, are still mostly covered, but what we can see looks pretty similar to the concept. An air inlet appears to stretch down from the narrow headlights at either side of the grille. The spy photographers also managed to get a look inside the new SUV, revealing a pretty standard e-tron interior. Featuring a big infotainment screen, a digital dash, and seats with a stitch pattern that looks kind of digital and futuristic, this SUV’s interior won’t surprise any Audi fans.

Audi predicted that the SUV would have a range of more than 560 km based on the NEDC cycle when it unveiled the concept. That, again, keeps it roughly in line with the VW ID.6. That SUV gets a range of between 436 km and 588 km on the same cycle, though its presumably less luxurious interior likely means less weight.

The ID.6 also gets three rows of seats and has a twin-motor drivetrain that combines for an output of 225 kW (301 hp). Just what this Audi version will deliver has not yet been officially revealed. No name has been associated with the car so far, but a full reveal is reportedly right around the corner and could come before the end of 2021 or early next year.
