Work continues on the 2023 BMW X1 as spy photographers have snapped a prototype wearing production headlights. Caught in a rail yard, the heavily camouflaged model features a bolder front fascia with a larger grille. While it’s not as big as the one found on the 4-Series, it features a flatter bottom as well as vertical sides. The grille is flanked by sweptback headlights with prominent daytime running lights. Their design is partially hidden by camouflage, but they appear to echo those found on the facelifted 3-Series.
Further below, we can see a
central intake with honeycomb mesh inserts and an X-shaped accent. There are
also vertical air curtains at the outside edges. Moving further back, there are
pronounced wheel arches and an angular shoulder line. The crossover also sports
streamlined bodywork, flush-mounted door handles and an evolutionary greenhouse
with revised quarter glass.
Rear details are harder to
make out, but it appears the crossover will have a streamlined bumper and a
more pronounced spoiler. The liftgate also appears evolutionary, but it’s hard
to be certain with all that camouflage. Spy photographers haven’t gotten a good
look inside, but the crossover will likely feature the company’s new Curved
Display. It consists of a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a 14.9-inch
infotainment system and BMW Operating System 8.
BMW hasn’t said much about the
redesigned X1, but the company has already confirmed it will go into production
at their Regensburg plant starting in 2022. The automaker has also confirmed
plans for an electric variant, which will likely be called the iX1. It should
be joined by an assortment of four-cylinder engines as well as a plug-in hybrid
variant.
