Despite the initial rumors of dropping the nameplate, BMW is getting ready to unveil the new generation 2-Series Active Tourer. The German MPV was spied during its final stages of development at the Nürburgring, before its official premiere before the end of 2021, possibly at the IAA Mobility in Munich. The second-generation BMW 2-Series Active Tourer was spied for the first time in September 2019, just a year after the debut of the facelifted first-generation model which originally appeared in 2014.

Since then, prototypes are slowly losing camouflage as we move closer to the reveal. Compared to prototypes spied last year, the new ones are wearing the production units of the LED headlights and taillights. Overall, the 2-Series Active Tourer retains the characteristic MPV silhouette of its predecessor while adopting modern design details and a slightly more muscular body for a sportier look. The grille is larger and the window line is more refined while the greenhouse and the panoramic sunroof shed plenty of light in the cabin.

The interior is expected to be roomier than the current Active Tourer, as the 7-seater Grand Tourer will likely be dropped from the range. As we have seen from earlier spy shots, the dashboard will be significantly redesigned, incorporating a curved panel for the digital cockpit similar to that in the fully electric iX. The new model will sit on an upgraded version of the same UKL platform that will also underpin the next-generation X1 and X2. It will be available in both front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive (xDrive) versions. Powertrain options will include the three-cylinder 1.5-liter petrol, the four-cylinder 2.0-liter diesel, and a plug-in hybrid.

The latter will probably be an evolution of the one found on the recently updated BMW 225xe Active Tourer which features a 10 kWh lithium-ion battery good for 55-57 kilometers of electric range. This model combines the 1.5-liter engine with a rear-mounted electric motor offering a combined output of 221 hp and all-wheel-drive.
