Hyundai will allegedly launch an all-electric city car in 2023. A supply contract with BorgWarner reveals that the car could be launched under any one of Hyundai Motor Group’s brands but it will most likely be badged a Hyundai or a Kia, Auto Express reports.
The powertrain will be sourced from BorgWarner and consists of an integrated electric drive module combining the motor and gearbox into a single unit. This unit can pump out as much as 181 hp but since this is going to be a city car, Hyundai will probably look to have it capped to roughly 100 hp.
Unlike other Hyundai Motor Group EVs, such as the Hyundai Ioniq 5, Kia EV6, and Genesis GV60, the new city car will not have an 800-volt architecture and instead use the more traditional 400-volt architecture of the Hyundai Kona Electric. It should be able to charge at approximately 159 km of range in 30 minutes through a 50 kW DC charger. Details regarding the battery pack are unclear but given the car’s compact dimensions, Auto Express thinks it will be around 40 kWh or so.
Back in January, Kia released a slew of teaser images previewing a plethora of new electric models that it is working on. It is possible that the vehicle pictured above is Hyundai Motor Group’s new electric city car. If that’s the case, then we can see that it has a very upright design with eye-catching C-pillars and a boxy shape.
