Volkswagen announced today that it will be showing off a near-production version of its upcoming ID.5 GTX at the IAA Munich Motor Show that’s set to run from September 7-12. Essentially a coupe version of the ID.4, the ID.5 GTX is likely to have much in common while sacrificing a little trunk space for a sportier-looking body. Photos released by the company so far, suggest that it will look a lot like the ID.4, though the red and green dazzle camouflage makes it hard to spot all the subtle differences.

VW has revealed that the ID.5 GTX will feature two motors and AWD, like the ID.4 GTX, but little else. We would anticipate that it will get the same 295 hp as the ID.4 GTX. Volkswagen did show, however, that it is capable of getting more out of the powertrain with the ID.X concept. Never intended for production, the skunkworks project was essentially an ID.3 GTX that made 328 hp that was good enough for a 0-60 time of 5.3 seconds versus the ID.4 GTX’s time of 6.2 seconds.

The automaker has confirmed that the ID.5 GTX, like other ID vehicles, will be capable of receiving over-the-air updates and will get Car2X technology that can, for instance, tell you how long is left until a red light goes green and warn you about upcoming road blockages. Along with the ID.5 GTX, a more sensible standard trim ID.5 model will join the lineup. It is very likely that the two new models will get the same 58 kWh and 77 kWh battery packs as the ID.4 and ID.4 GTX.

The ID.5 GTX will arrives at dealers next year and will be the second model from the sporty GTX product brand. Volkswagen aims for all-electric cars to account for 70 percent of its total sales in Europe by 2030 and to become net carbon neutral by 2050.
