A few weeks ago, Mercedes-AMG unveiled their first fully electric sedan – the EQS 53 – in Munich. Today, a camouflaged prototype of the smaller but equally potent EQE 53 was spied by our photographers testing in Affalterbach, the home of AMG. The EQE, also unveiled in Munich, is based on a shorter version of the EQS platform, measuring 4,934 mm in length. It also has a very similar design to the electric flagship, with an aerodynamic silhouette and proportions deviating from the ICE-powered E-Class.
The performance variant from AMG will most likely share its sporty body kit with the EQE AMG Line with small differences. The camouflaged prototype doesn’t reveal much but we can see the huge multi-spoke wheels shod in low profile Michelin tires, the ceramic brakes with gold calipers, and the larger rear spoiler. As for the underpinnings, the EQE will most likely get AMG-specific electric motors in both axles offering all-wheel drive, sportier settings for the adaptive air suspension, and beefier brakes. We can’t be sure about the power/torque figures yet but those could be close to the larger EQS 53 given that the two performance-focused electric sedans will be sharing a few components.
Speaking of which, the dual-motor setup of the Mercedes-AMG EQS 53 produces 649 hp and 950 Nm of torque, or up to 751 hp and 1020 Nm with the optional AMG Dynamic Plus package. It is most likely for the EQE 53 to be slightly less powerful in order to position itself better in AMG’s range. The Mercedes-AMG EQE 53 is expected to be revealed during the first half of 2022, with production starting in mid-2022 alongside the non-AMG variants of the electric sedan.
