The Born is Cupra’s first electric model and the very first unit has rolled off the line in Zwickau, Germany today, the brand announced. Based on the Volkswagen ID.3, the Born (named after El Born, a fashionable neighborhood in Barcelona) marks the dawn of a new era for the brand, which hopes this vehicle will make up 20 percent of its global sales. Built in Zwickau, Germany alongside the VW ID.3 and ID.4, as well as the Audi Q4 e-tron (standard and sportback), Cupra plans to eventually make the Born in Martorell, Spain. That factory is set to be ready for EVs in 2025 and the Spanish brand has sent its own staff to Zwickau to monitor production and gather experience.
Cupra hopes to become an EV-only company by 2030, so getting their plant ready for the Born (and any other vehicles that are set to follow) will be crucial. Customers can opt for a base Cupra Born that has a 45 kWh battery that’s good for 340 km of range on the WLTP cycle. It makes 148 hp. The highest-power version available at launch will be capable of 418 km of range and 228 hp.
The model is set to go on sale in November with the option of using the car through a subscription model. Customers eyeing the Born up will have the opportunity to see it in the flesh at the Automobile Barcelona 2021 show, which kicks off on Thursday, September 30.
