Toyota has joined the other automakers in Guangzhou with a new Camry generation designed for the Chinese market. Compared to its American counterpart, the new model sports a slightly different exterior and a new cabin. The sales will begin next spring.
While the base-spec U.S. Camry comes with
an unpainted body kit, the Chinese version has its exterior trim painted to
match the rest of the body – even in the cheapest trim. Paying extra for the
top trim will net you black décor all around and a distinct new bumper, another
thing missing from the U.S. lineup.
Inside, the dashboard looks laconic with
no creases in sight and gets rid of most physical buttons. The infotainment
display in the middle provides access to most in-car functions, unlike the U.S.
version which still retains a separate HVAC control panel.
In China, Toyota’s most affordable saloon
will ship with a 2.0-liter petrol engine and 177 PS. The
higher trim versions will benefit from an electric starter, and there will be a
PHEV variant as well, based on a superior 2.5-liter engine. The other details
aren’t here yet.
