Mazda has finally taken the wraps off the 2025 CX-70, a two-row version of its biggest SUV, the CX-90. With similar styling, and a more or less identical lineup of powertrains, the model will be perfect for buyers who want a CX-90, but are more interested in hauling stuff than people. Mazda openly admits that the CX-70 is better suited to suburbs than off-road trails, but that clarity of purpose may be a good thing, since the automaker hopes to deliver a big premium SUV for small families. The automaker says it has focused on offering owners lots of cabin and cargo space.
The CX-70 will offer buyers an
“expressive” and “varied” color palette inside, per Mazda, which will be
complemented by high-quality materials, such as gray metallic inlays, Nappa
leather, and red stitch detailing that was inspired by the 100th Anniversary
Special Edition MX-5. Unfortunately, interior dimensions have not yet been
shared, but Mazda says that features such as remote-folding rear seats will
make loading long items into the luggage compartment easier. Hooks for bags,
additional compartments, and a sub-trunk to keep valuable items out of sight
will all help improve the CX-70’s practicality.
Exterior styling follows from the CX-90,
which isn’t a problem since that’s a handsome SUV. Mazda says its proportions
come from its “sporty” underpinnings. Like the CX-90, the CX-70 will feature a
front-engine, all-wheel-drive drivetrain with rear-wheel bias. Buyers will have
the option of a 3.3-liter turbocharged mild-hybrid inline-six, or a plug-in
hybrid setup that’s based around a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine. Although
Mazda has not yet confirmed specs for the CX-70, seeing as how these are the
same powertrains on offer in the three-row model, it seems safe to assume that
outputs will be similar.
In the CX-90, the 3.3-liter engine offers
either 280 hp and 450 Nm of torque or 340 hp and 500 Nm of torque. Meanwhile, the four-pot and the
electric motors in the PHEV setup combine to offer 323 hp and 500 Nm of torque. Mazda says that the CX-70 will come with plenty
of new driver assistance technologies. These include cruising and traffic
support, as well as unresponsive driver support, which slows the SUV down if
the driver is unconscious or unable to control the vehicle.
The model will also integrate Amazon’s
voice assistant, Alexa, allowing the driver to make hands-free commands that
change the temperature, the radio station, or their smart home devices. Mazda
has not yet revealed when the new CX-70 will hit showrooms nor how much it will
cost, but has stated that it will be a model year 2025 vehicle, so we
anticipate more details later this year.
