Great Wall Motor brand Tank is getting ready to launch its new flagship off-roader, the Tank 800. According to GWM Growth Director Li Ruifeng as quoted by CarNewsChina, the luxurious full-size SUV will be officially introduced on its domestic market at the end of the year.

The company first showed us a conceptual version of the car at the Shanghai Auto Show three years ago. Car spotters hadn’t managed to catch a prototype testing nutil last summer, though. The photos published now suggest that the production SUV will look almost indistinguishable from the concept. One has to wonder what took Tank so long to begin the production.

Like the Tank 700 Hi4-T before it, the Tank 800 is expected to debut with a high-end plug-in hybrid powertrain. Based on a 3.0-liter V6, the system churns out more than 500 PS. The newcomer may also borrow its predecessor’s 37.1-kWh Svolt battery pack, although it isn’t official yet.

Despite being around 5.2 meters long, the Tank 800 will be primarily offered as a luxury four-seater with particularly deluxe rear seats. The media in China suppose that a six- or seven-seat version may go on sale later. From what little we have seen so far, the SUV has a front fascia similar to that of the Tank 500
