Mercedes is giving spy photographers a break as they’ve released official pictures of their next-generation of vans. They’re based on the new Mercedes‑Benz Van Electric Architecture (VAN.EA), which is billed as “modular, flexible and scalable.” While we’ve already seen a handful of V-Class mules, the latest images reveal prototypes that are closer to production and feature new bodywork. This is largely hidden beneath camouflage and padding, but we can get a glimpse of new headlights as well as flush-mounted door handles. They’re joined by a modernized greenhouse and what appears to be a more upright front fascia. Designers also moved the mirrors down to the doors, while also tweaking the rear liftgate.

Mercedes didn’t have much to say about the prototypes, but reiterated “all newly developed medium and large vans” will ride on the VAN.EA architecture starting in 2026. The company went on to say the platform will allow for “clear differentiation between privately positioned vans in the luxury segment and commercial vans in the premium segment.” In effect, it sounds like there will be greater separation between the Vito and V-Class. Mercedes added the “portfolio will range from family vans to exclusive VIP shuttles to luxurious and spacious limousines for customers with the highest demands.”

 

It’s too early to talk about specifications, but the automaker said the vans will offer front- and all-wheel drive. They’ll also have 800V technology, a 22 kW AC charger, and the latest version of the Mercedes‑Benz Operating System. The company has previously said luxury private vans will have a range “well over” 500 km. A Level 2 semi-autonomous driving system will be available at launch and there are plans for a Level 3 system by the end of the decade.

Premium commercial vans, on the other hand, will offer extensive customization as well as a Level 4 autonomous driving system to “address the business potential of driverless transportation.”
