The national research and development centre for information and communication technology (MIMOS) is back with a teaser of a new SUV design, called the Proton Bayu. So far, only one sketch has been released, showing the rear three-quarter view. The Bayu was designed by the agency’s head of industrial design Saharudin Busri.

The Bayu appears to be derived from the Geely Boyue. Proton announced last week that it would be building its first SUV based on the Boyue, after it was confirmed that the Chinese conglomerate would be acquiring a major stake in the company.

Looking at the sole image, the basic design of the Boyue is clearly seen here – but Saharudin has made a few visual tweaks to make it his own. The most distinctive change is the large L-shaped chrome trim that starts from the beltline and sweeps up the C-pillar, repeating the brightwork on the lower flanks.

The floating look created by the blacked-out pillars has been retained, but it’s been emphasised by the continuation of the upper chrome window trim across the rear spoiler. Meanwhile, the graphics of the two-piece tail lights have been subtly revised, as has the rear valence design – with side air vents flanking a skid plate incorporating twin exhaust exits. Turbine-design five-spoke alloy wheels complete the look.
