The Renault R.S.18 represents the team’s third
chassis since their return to Formula 1 as a full works outfit, back in 2016.
Based on the 2017 car, the R.S.18 boasts an improved suspension concept and
more aerodynamic downforce.
Other features include the mandatory ‘Halo’ cockpit
protection system, the re-profiled engine cover and what appears to be a more
reliable 1.6-liter turbocharged V6 power unit, which performed very well on the
dyno in Viry- Châtillon. This year, teams are only allowed to utilize a total
of three power units, for the 21-race calendar.
The aesthetic of the R.S.18 is very dynamic, as the
mixture of black and yellow delivers a powerful contrast. When viewed only from
the front, the car actually appears to be mostly yellow, however, from the
side, it’s the other way around, boasting a mostly black theme. Overall, it’s
very Borussia Dortmund-ish, for any soccer fans out there.
Meanwhile, 30-year old Nico Hulkenberg said that he
can’t wait to get behind the wheel of the R.S.18. Hulkenberg, together with his
new teammate Carlos Sainz, will get to know the car during the first Barcelona
tests, scheduled to take place between February 26 and March 1st.
