Honda is reportedly gearing up to release an (Acura
in North America) NSX Roadster before the end of 2018, according to German
publication Autobild.
Given the popularity of drop-top supercars, it
wouldn’t be at all surprising if the Japanese automaker does indeed cut the
roof of its hybrid supercar. As of yet, however, our spy photographers have yet
to see an NSX Roadster testing in the wild so if the car is indeed launching in
the coming months, Honda has been very secretive about putting it through its
paces.
Any possible convertible version of the Honda /
Acura NSX would inevitably feature the same powertrain as the hardtop.
Consequently, the car would use a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 engine mated
to three electric motors to deliver a combined 573 hp and 476 lb-ft of torque.
That grunt would be enough to send an NSX Roadster to 100 km/h in
roughly 3 seconds.
As it stands, the NSX coupe is one of the most
attractive cars in its segment. Chop the roof off and revise the rear decklid
with a pair of flying buttresses and the NSX Roadster could look even better.
Honda’s plans for the NSX may not stop here either. In fact, the company has
apparently been working on an NSX Type R for quite some time now with even
better straight-line performance and handling than the existing model.
