If you grew up in the ’80s and you loved rally
racint, odds are the likes of Ford, Lancia and Peugeot were among your favorite
automakers. Yet, perhaps no vehicle was more iconic than the Audi Quattro, the
first rally car to adopt four-wheel drive in competition racing.
Here’s your chance to get your hands on one such
car, namely a 1985 Tornado Red Audi Quattro, rocking European-spec headlights,
a turbocharged 2.1-liter inline-five and a 5-speed manual transmission.
The car is getting auctioned off on Bring a Trailer,
and has 204,000 km on the clock. It also comes with a red
exterior, black leather interior, plus several new parts such as the timing
belt, water pump, drive belts, shocks, brakes, tires and more.
While it features European-spec headlights, its
North American bumper design was retained. Audi Quattro models sold in the U.S.
and Canada had larger impact bumpers with built-in shock absorbers. They
didn’t, however, have ABS, although most came with air conditioning and leather
upholstery – like this one.
According to the seller, the air-con and the stereo
work fine, while the cruise control is inoperable. Overall, the interior seems
to be in very good condition.
As for the 2.1-liter power unit, it has been
serviced in the past 4,000 km, while a four year old test
revealed good compression on all five cylinders. Cars like this
don’t come cheap: the current bid, with two days left, is US$ 42,000, despite the
car’s rather high mileage.
