Mazda introduced the redesigned CX-5 at the 2016 Los
Angeles Auto Show and it now appears the 2019 model is going to receive some
pretty significant updates. In a Reddit post noticed by Autoblog, a member of the site said they
went to a dealership to purchase a Mazda6 and their salesperson ended up
showing them a print out of the company’s 2019 model year updates. Assuming the
document is legitimate, it indicates some important changes are coming soon –
to Canada at least.
Starting under the hood, the CX-5 GT will reportedly
be offered with the turbocharged 2.5-liter SkyActiv-G engine that is available
in the Mazda6 and CX-9. The document doesn’t mention performance
specifications, but the engine develops up to 250 hp and 420 Nm of torque when running on 93 octane fuel. This would be a
significant improvement over the current naturally-aspirated engine which is
rated at 187 hp and 251 Nm of torque.
Besides the newly optional turbocharged engine, the
2019 CX-5 is slated to receive G-Vectoring Control Plus. G-Vectoring Control
has been around for awhile, so it’s possible that G-Vectoring Control Plus is
simply an improved version of the technology.
Besides the performance changes, the document hints
at “substantial visual changes to the interior.” That’s pretty vague, but the
CX-5 GT will have a redesigned instrument cluster with a seven-inch color
display. The range-topping model also features more comfortable rear seats with
a new backrest angle and better cushioning.
Additional changes are minor, but include the
addition of Android Auto and Apple CarPlay as well as updated wheels and new
standard equipment. There’s no word on whether or not these changes will carry over to
the US-spec model, but we’ll likely find out soon enough.
