A little over 45 years after unveiling the 2002
Turbo at the 1973 Frankfurt Motor Show, BMW is celebrating its legendary
performance model with a limited edition of the M2 Competition. Aimed strictly at the French market,
where it starts from € 75,000, or € 7,000 more than the
regular model, the M2 Competition Heritage Edition is limited to 40 examples
and sports a number of visual updates both inside and out.
Aside from a number of carbon fiber M Performance
accessories, such as the grille, front apron, side mirror caps, rear diffuser,
wing and exhaust tips, the special M2 features blue and red M decals
reminiscent to the 2002 Turbo, the words ‘Heritage Edition’ on the front apron
and ‘Heritage’ on boot lid spoiler, as well as the ‘Edition Heritage’ and ‘X of
40’ badges, displaying each car’s unique status, on the front fenders.
Another plaque with the inscriptions ‘Edition
Heritage’ and ‘X of 40’ is found inside, right under the climate control, while
the limited model comes with a leather keychain with a ‘Heritage’ logo, while
the cabin also sports contrast stitching and carbon fiber trim.
Unlike the 2002 Turbo’s four-pot that was rated at
170 PS and 241 Nm of torque, the M2 Competition
is powered by a 410 PS and 550 Nm twin-turbo
inline-six.
The M2 Heritage Edition was introduced to the public
at the BMW M Town Festival held last weekend in Magny-Cours, and is also taking
part in the Tour Auto Optic 2000, which started on April 29 in Paris and will
end on May 4 in Deauville.
