McLaren has been spied testing its latest Speedtail
prototype in Southern Europe, this time painted orange. Since the British car
manufacturer has already unveiled the Speedtail, there’s no need to cover up
the body of the prototype, providing us with an excellent idea of how the
hyper-GT looks on the road and in a color different than the light blue of the
original show car. Additionally, one particular image shows the front turn
signal in operation, stretching down from the main headlight unit towards the
carbon fiber front splitter.
The Speedtail really looks unlike anything else on
the market. It is identifiable as a McLaren from the front and takes on a
distinct look from the sides thanks to an all-glass cockpit that seamlessly stretches
back to the decklid. This prototype, just like the show car and eventual
production models, has a wheel cover on the front to aid in aerodynamics. It
appears to be removable.
An earlier McLaren Speedtail prototype caught fire
back in June because of any electrical fault. McLaren will hope this example
doesn’t suffer the same fate.
Only 106 examples of the Speedtail will be produced
for customers. Each will use a 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine with 746
hp and 799 Nm of torque that’s aided by an electric motor with 308
hp and 347 Nm of torque to create a total of 1035 hp and 1149 Nm. The sprint from a standstill to 300 km/h will be dealt
with in just 12.8 seconds and the car won’t stop accelerating until it hits 402 km/h.
