Mercedes-AMG has released a new teaser
video which appears to show an electrified GT 4-Door Coupe. The mysterious
model makes a brief appearance at the end of the clip as the tagline reads
“Together we define the future of performance.”
The teaser isn’t very revealing, but
it shows a GT 4-Door Coupe with a camouflaged rear bumper and a four-tailpipe
exhaust system that appears identical to the one used on the GT 63 S. The car
also accelerates quietly as the only sound is the whirring of an electric
motor.
While the clip doesn’t say what the
car is, Motor1 believes the model is the GT 73. That remains unconfirmed, but
AMG CEO Tobias Moers has previously said a high-performance model, previewed by
the original GT concept, would eventually be go into production. More recently,
AMG’s sales boss confirmed a plug-in hybrid would be introduced in 2020.
Specifications remain unconfirmed, but
the GT concept debuted at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show and featured a twin-turbo
4.0-liter V8 engine, a rear-mounted electric motor and a lightweight battery.
This setup enabled the all-wheel drive model to produce up to 805 hp and accelerate from 0-100 km/h in less than three seconds.
The concept also had a powertrain
selector which enabled drivers to choose from three options including electric
only, petrol engine only and a hybrid setup that used both. It remains unclear
if all three options will carry over to the production model, but the teaser
video does show an “EV” button.
Regardless of the final numbers, the
upcoming model will be more powerful than the GT 63 S which has a twin-turbo
4.0-liter V8 that develops 630 hp and 900 Nm of
torque. It enables the hatchback to rocket from 0-100 km/h in 3.2
seconds, before hitting a top speed of up to 305 km/h.
