Mercedes-Benz has teased the flagship variant of the new Maybach S-Class through a darkened image on a press release about the centenary of its sub-brand. What’s interesting about this model is that, as evidenced by the badge in the front quarter panel, it will feature a V12. Even though the 2020 model also had a twin-turbocharged V12, it was dropped for the updated 2021 Mercedes-Maybach S-Class, which is only offered with a twin-turbo V8 instead.
It is no secret that the automaker’s V12
is on its final legs and while powertrain details about this specific Maybach
S-Class variant haven’t been revealed, it is expected to feature the company’s
6.0-liter twin-turbocharged mill and could be badged either the S650 or the
S680. The car can be expected to muscle out in excess of 600 hp which will be
sent to the pavement through Merc’s 4Matic all-wheel drive system.
The all-new Maybach S-Class was unveiled
in early March and starts at US$ 184,900 in the U.S., a cool US$ 75,100 premium over
the standard 2021 S-Class. The only powertrain currently available is a
twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 with EQ Boost technology. This engine is good
for 496 hp and 700 Nm of torque while the electric motor adds an
extra 21 hp and 249 Nm for short periods.
