Maserati’s Porsche Macan competitor is inching closer to production as the company has announced the 2022 Grecale will be introduced in November. While the company didn’t give an exact date, Maserati said the countdown has begun and noted the crossover will continue its tradition of naming vehicles after the most famous winds in the world. In the case of the Grecale, it’s named after a “strong north-east wind of the Mediterranean.”
Designed to slot beneath the
Levante, the Grecale will feature a familiar front end with a prominent grille
that is flanked by MC20-inspired headlights. Previous spy photos have also
shown curvaceous bodywork and a rakish windscreen that flows into a sloping
roof. Other notable highlights will include large wheels, which are backed up
by ventilated discs and red calipers. The model will also have an angular rear
window, slender taillights and a sporty exhaust system.
Spy photographers haven’t
gotten a good look inside, but pictures have shown what appears to be a
three-spoke steering wheel with paddle shifters. We can also expect a digital
instrument cluster, metallic accents and a tiered dashboard.
Maserati has been tight-lipped
about specifications, but the Grecale is expected to ride on the Giorgio
platform and share a number of components with the Alfa Romeo Stelvio. These
could include a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 280 hp and a twin-turbo 2.9-liter V6 with 505 hp. However, more
recent reports have suggested the crossover could use a detuned version of the
twin-turbo 3.0-liter V6 that powers the MC20.
Regardless of what engines are
available, Maserati has already confirmed plans for an electric variant which
will wear the Folgore moniker.
